History
It is believed that Zeus was born in a cave on Mount Ida on the island of Crete. The Cretans believed that Zeus died and was resurrected annually. His tomb was said to be on Mount Juchtas, just outside of Heraklion. Zeus in the past and still to this day, has a temple that was dedicated to him called “The Temple of Zeus.” This is now the most important building in the Altis.
Greek Explanations
It is believed that the reason the Greeks created the stories of Zeus was to, create a supreme ruler of their gods. Some natural phenomenons the Greeks may have been trying to explain through the myths of Zeus may of been to explain the movement of stars, births, deaths, natural disasters, storms, and to explain the world above them, the sky, clouds, and the mystery floating above the Greeks.
