Powers and Domain of Artemis
Artemis was the Greek goddess of the moon, wild animals and the wilderness, the hunt, and fertility. She wished to her father, Zeus, to be a virgin forever when she was young, so this story would also associate her with chastity. She would also watch over children and maiden girls. Many of her other attributes contradict each other, as she would both protect pregnant women and kill them in childbirth, watch over wild animals and then hunt them, and heal people, and then spread diseases. For the most part she remained in the wilderness, such as “mountain forests and uncultivated land”, and travelled in the company of a large number of nymphs. A few of her lesser-known aspects include lakes, forest fires, harbors and roads in the wild, and fishing.
She also had several other titles, such as Potnia Theron (“Mistress of Wild Animals”), Kourotrophos (“Nurse of Youth’s”), Locheia (“Helper in Childbirth”), Agrotera (“Huntress”), and Cynthia Amarynthia (which is partially derived from her birthplace on Mount Cynthus of Delos, which was where she was born in at least one version of her origin myth). Also, she was sometimes associated with Selene, Britomartis, and Hekate.
