Apollo-God of the Sun
By: Karley MacArthur & Shelby Langston
Origin Myth:
Apollo is known today as the very talented god of music, prophecy, intellectual pursuits, healing, plague, and the sun. He was born to the well-known gods named Zeus and Leto. His twin sister's name is Artemis, also known as the virgin hunter. As sun god, he was also called "Sol" for the Latin word meaning "Sun." Apollo was known as the most "Greek" of the Greek gods for his ideal form of kouros, a young man in perfected beauty and grace.
Apollo's origin begins when he was born to his mother Leto, and her attempt to give birth to both he and his twin sister Artemis. Hera, the goddess of marriage and woman, was very jealous Leto was giving birth to twins, so she pursued her constantly and Leto tried to give birth to the twins in a safe spot where Hera couldn't find her: the island of Delos. Since Hera was in a rage, Eilithyia, goddess of childbirth couldn't help Leto and she waited nine days and nights to give birth to Apollo. When Hera was distracted by Iris, Eilithyia was able to come to Leto and assist her in childbirth. Apollo was then born, full-grown, saying, "The lyre and curved bow are dear to me, and I shall prophesy to men the unerring will of Zeus."
