Significant Myth: Persephone
Persephone was depicted as a nymph by the Greeks and was the daughter of Demeter. Hades fell in love with her and with Zeus' encouragement, Hades kidnapped Persephone and kept her in the underworld. Demeter then put a curse on the land of Nysa that started a great famine and she demanded that if she doesn't get Persephone back, then she won't stop the famine. Zeus had to do something, so he finally asked Hermes to send a request to Hades to have Persephone back. When Persephone was about to go back to Demeter, Hades gave her a pomegranate. When she took a bite it made her return to the underworld for a portion of each year. Persephone soon became Hades' wife in the underworld.
